Teaching Kids To Stay Safe Online

When I teach marketing, I always say “the Virtual World is just like the Real World…MAGNIFIED”.

A positive mom is not naive about world issues. A positive mom embraces “the good, the bad, and the ugly”, and we can all agree that while there is a lot of good online, there is also a share of bad and ugly “out there”, and it is all magnified indeed.

Should you ban your children from Facebook, from searching online, from technology altogether?

There is such a thing as being TOO cautious with kids. Kids need to experience life. Instead of fear, bring awareness!

So what should children, tweens and teens should be aware of?

The YouTube Safety Center created a video to teach families to keep their children safe online. It’s Internet Safety for Children (and anyone, really!). I think we can all learn something from this video:

  1. “Personal is personal”
  2. “Think before you post”
  3. “Respect yourself”
  4. “Be skeptical of new people you meet online”
  5. “Don’t be a bully AND don’t put up with bullies”

I really like this approach to teaching Internet Safety because it’s fun and it’s third party validation. As a single mom, I am fun and adventurous, but sometimes I have to be the disciplinarian. It is good to have backup such as this as I am not a huge fan of “because I said so”.

Children have the right to know the reason behind rules and I believe they will be more likely to follow them if they develop the belief that they are in their best interest. I can probably say that my most amazing realization as a mother has been that children are their own self and we are teachers and guides along their path of growth and development. Teaching them awareness and consciousness will help them make better choices NOW and in the future.

What Internet Safety Tips Do You Teach Your Kids?

Have a powerful day!
